So you look it up. And every guide you find answers the question for someone swimming in an 11 degree lake in November. You swim in a heated pool on a Tuesday evening, or your eight-year-old does on Saturday mornings, and none of it lands. The articles talk about neoprene thickness and cold water insulation and settling into the swim faster. Your pool is 30 degrees. You still don't know whether to buy.

That gap isn't an accident. Almost every page ranking for this question is published by an open-water or triathlon brand, so it answers for an open-water swimmer. Nobody writes for the pool.

Swim socks do four things, and a neoprene sock and a thin latex sock deliver almost opposite subsets of them. Which benefits you get depends entirely on the material and where you swim. Get that wrong and you buy insulation you'll never use, or a barrier when you needed warmth. This is the one benefit on the list that applies to every reader regardless of material, setting or water temperature. If you take nothing else from this article, that's the honest baseline.

Comfort on rough floors and hot poolside

Pool floors are rougher underfoot than they look, and that roughness is deliberate.

Non-slip tiling has to have texture or it stops being non-slip. It does its job admirably and it also feels like fine sandpaper if you're standing on it for half an hour. Drainage channels and grates are worse. Add an outdoor lido or a holiday pool and you get hot paving in summer, which turns the walk to the water into a sprint on tiptoe.

The disadvantages of swim socks

Swim socks have four real drawbacks, and sizing catches out more people than the other three combined.

You'll struggle to find this section anywhere else, because almost everyone writing about swim socks sells them. Here it is anyway.

Sizing and tightness. This is the big one. A sock that's too tight is uncomfortable enough to stop getting used, and it's hard to judge before buying. Our own guidance is to take your normal shoe size and size up if you're between sizes. Interestingly the advice runs the other way for neoprene: Two materials, opposite advice, which is exactly the kind of thing that gets lost when everything is called a swim sock.

Care determines lifespan far more than price does, and most socks are killed by heat rather than by wear.

Thin latex and rubber socks are reusable, and the routine that keeps them that way is short. Rinse them in clean water after every session, because chlorine left to dry does the damage rather than the swimming itself. Then let them air dry naturally, away from radiators and direct sun.

What ends them early is heat and force. Machine washing, tumble drying, drying on a radiator, or pulling hard at the cuff when they're stuck to a damp foot. Rolling them on the way you'd roll on a sock, rather than yanking, adds months.

Neoprene is similar with one addition: rinse the salt out after sea swims, and never leave a wet pair balled up in a kit bag through the week. Damp neoprene stored wet degrades and starts to smell in a way that no amount of later washing fixes.
