How neoprene actually warms your feet
Neoprene works by trapping a thin layer of water against your skin that your body then heats, not by keeping water out.
This surprises people, and it's the single most useful fact in this article. A neoprene sock is not a seal. Water gets in immediately and it's supposed to. What happens next is that the layer of water sitting between the neoprene and your skin stops circulating. Your body warms it. The neoprene, which is full of tiny gas bubbles, then slows the rate at which that warmth escapes into the cold water outside.
Which leads to the part most buying guides bury: fit matters more than thickness. If the sock is loose at the ankle, cold water flushes through continuously. The trapped layer never gets a chance to warm up, and you've bought 5mm of neoprene that performs like nothing at all.

The same physics applies at your ankle. When it comes to neoprene, a snug fit beats an extra millimetre every time.
Seams matter for the same reason. A flatlock seam is comfortable and lets water through at the stitch line. Glued and blind-stitched seams cost more and leak far less, which is why Outdoor Swimmer's testers reported "very little water ingress" on blind-stitched neoprene. For thickness against water temperature, a rough guide:
- 2mm: summer sea and lake swimming, roughly 15 degrees and up
- 3mm: the year-round default for most UK swimmers

Why waterproof and water-resistant socks don't warm you

It's an intuitive assumption that if something keeps water off your skin it must also keep you warm. Waterproof coats are warm, after all. But a waterproof coat is warm because of the insulation layered inside it, not because of the waterproof membrane, which on its own is a thin sheet of nothing.
A thin water-resistant sock is that membrane without the insulation. It sits between your skin and the surface underneath. There's no thickness of gas-filled material to slow heat loss, so heat leaves at roughly the rate it always did.

- Consider boots below about 8 degrees. Socks reach a limit. Boots add thickness, a better ankle seal and a stiffer sole for rocky entries.

- Warm up before you get in, not just after. Arriving cold means starting from a deficit you spend the whole swim failing to close.
- Plan the exit. The Outdoor Swimming Society notes that you're typically at your coldest around ten minutes after you get out, as blood returns to your skin and cools. That's afterdrop, and it catches out people who felt fine in the water. Dry clothes and a hot drink ready at the bank matter more than most kit.
Worth knowing alongside all of this: the Outdoor Swimming Society describes how, as blood moves to the core in cold water, blood flow to the limbs drops and can weaken arms and legs to the point where swimming becomes difficult. Cold extremities aren't only a comfort problem. Staying close to shore is sensible in cold water regardless of what's on your feet.
Socks or boots?
Below about 8 degrees, boots outperform socks, and the reason is the ankle rather than the thickness.
This is the decision most people reach in their second winter, and it's worth understanding before you buy a thicker sock hoping it solves the problem.
A sock ends at the ankle in a soft cuff. That cuff is the weak point, because it's where water enters and where flushing starts. A boot extends higher up the leg and usually has a firmer closure, sometimes with a strap, which slows the exchange of water considerably. You get the same neoprene doing more work simply because less cold water is moving past your skin.
Boots also give you a stiffer sole. On frozen ground, rocky entries or a gravel car park in February, that matters as much as the insulation does.
The cost is flexibility and feel. Boots are bulkier, they change your kick noticeably, and they're harder to pack. For most UK swimmers through spring, summer and autumn, socks are the better answer. For January in a lake, boots earn their place.
A simple rule: if you're swimming above 8 degrees, buy socks and spend the money on fit rather than thickness. If you're regularly below that, look at boots before you look at 5mm socks.
